Throughout human history the fascination with animals has been present. Weather treated as companions, gods or hunting prey they have always had a strong connection with human race. By looking back to ancient times we are able to see how certain animals were admired and worshipped and others looked down upon as being evil or dangerous. Our ancestors had a way of emphasizing certain aspects of animal kingdom. They were able to rise certain animals to great heights and make others more dangerous than what they really were.
As time went by, certain species slowly diminished into oblivion. There is no way of telling how many species are extinct because of man’s abuse. However, just as there are those who were responsible for the extension of such species, there are those who were always there to protect them. Thanks to those people we are able to marvel at the greatness of these animals even today. Some are watched closely in their natural environments while others are kept safe in closed areas that as much as possible resemble their natural habitats.
Today we are able to see all types of animals from all over the world in almost any zoo we go to. Calgary Zoo is the second largest zoo in Canada, and as such serves as a home to some of the animals you will not have the chance to see anywhere else. With several different, themed, exhibits currently at disposal like Canadian Wilds, Destination Africa, Botanical gardens, Australia, Prehistoric Park, Eurasia, and South America you are guaranteed to find animals you like. There are over 1,000 animals offered for viewing in over 290 species.
Calgary Zoo is open almost every day, with two exceptions in the entire year: December 25 and Zoogala. Main gates open at 9:00 AM and the zoo remains open up to 5:00 PM. Kitamba Java opens at the same time as the zoo does, at 9:00 AM while Kitamba Café opens an hour later, at 10:00 AM. Both close an hour earlier than the zoo, at 4:00 PM. Guest Relations are available the entire time the zoo remains open, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
