Kerry Diotte's Full Biography
Kerry Diotte is a Sault Ste. Marie born Canadian, currently a member of Edmonton City Council in Ward 11. He was born on Feb. 26, 1956 and was the youngest of five children. Thanks to his Bachelor of Arts degree in English that he received at Carleton University in Ottawa, and journalism at Algonquin College, he was able to work at a daily paper in Ottawa. After that he worked for a CBC affiliate, doing television and radio reports.
After 1982 he moved to Alberta and started working as a journalist for Calgary Sun, and later for Alberta Report newsmagazine. He was hired by the Edmonton Sun in 1985, where he did various jobs from being copy editor, to jobs like senior reporter, night assignment editor, city hall columnist, feature writer and many more. His journalistic career has been rather praised, and he has won Sun Media national journalism awards. He is also noted for writing two commemorative magazines about the devastating tornado that reigned over Edmonton in 1987. The list of his publishing successes also includes a book about Edmonton's recent history.
During his long career he has always helped the community, either by teaching journalism, giving talks to students and appearing on many TV and radio shows. He was also a member of the Presidential Advisory Committee at Carleton University in the period from 1998 to 2003.
Diotte was the president of the Canadian Association of Journalists Edmonton chapter for many years, and has served as a national director for the organization as well. Because of Edmonton municipal elections in 2010, he resigned from these positions. He focused his campaign on improving core services demanding that more attention be brought to roads, transit, and parks and recreation facilities. His campaign included a Facebook site and a website as well, hoping to expand his supporters. He was elected as Edmonton City Councilor in Ward 11 thanks to the 44.3% of the vote.
He is also currently the resident of Edmonton’s Ward 11, and personally enjoys travel, photography, scuba diving, golf and writing.
